As it does every year, Keuka College commemorated Constitution Day this week with a public forum focusing on current political events and how they relate to the foundational source of the nation’s laws and governing principles.
Keuka College Professor of History Dr. Chris Leahy discussed “Law, Not Politics: The Origins & Legacy of Judicial Review” on Monday in Room 109 of Hegeman Hall. The presentation, which was attended by students, faculty, and staff, included a discussion of the recent overturning of Roe v. Wade.
Dr. Leahy is a nationally recognized political scholar, specializing in the U.S. presidency and 18th- and 19th-century American politics. His 2020 biography, “President without a Party: The Life of John Tyler,” was hailed as “deeply researched” and “gracefully written” by the Wall Street Journal and boasts a 4.2 (out of five) reader rating on Goodreads. He has lectured on Tyler, the nation’s 10th president and first to ascend to the office upon the death of his predecessor, in forums broadcast on C-SPAN and hosted by the Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Library.
Created in 2004, Constitution Day is formally observed each year on or near Sept. 17, the anniversary of the day in 1787 when delegates to the Constitutional Convention signed the document in Philadelphia.
