Members of Keuka College’s Association of Future Social Workers (AFSW) will volunteer at EquiCenter’s largest fundraiser, the Mane Event, Saturday, Sept. 29.
Located in Honeoye Falls, EquiCenter’s mission is to foster personal growth and individual achievement of people with disabilities, at-risk youth, veterans, and their families using a wide range of therapeutic equestrian and related programs. Additional programs include therapeutic horticulture on a three-acre organic farm, canine-assisted activities, adaptive yoga, and farm-to-table culinary classes.
“This is a huge undertaking for the center, and a prestigious and wonderful opportunity for our students,” says Christopher Clinton, assistant professor of social work.
During the Mane Event, 24 students in AFSW will be responsible for setting up tables and chairs, organizing silent auction items, and ensuring the entire facility is ready for the nearly 200 participants.
Additionally, the College students—ranging from freshmen to those taking the College’s Master of Social Work program—will act as servers during a four-course meal and assist guests throughout the evening.
As a volunteer at EquiCenter, Professor Clinton has heard about the Mane Event previously.
“I have been a volunteer with EquiCenter for nine years,” says Professor Clinton. “I have helped develop and facilitate some of the programs for at-risk youth, and have volunteered for many fundraising events.”
During the event, Professor Clinton hopes his students will learn about the importance of service, and the power of people coming together.
“This event benefits people in need of services and support,” he says. “This is an enormous event with many people of different backgrounds and skills coming together. I hope that the students see the large scope of service that can be provided when people work together.”
